And the winner is…

FREDERICK, Maryland - The 2019-20 sports season gave us so many memorable sports moments; from comeback victories to individual accomplishments that shattered the record books. We couldn't fit in everything but we did our best to make the list reflect what moments captured our attention and inspired us in what will go down as one of the most memorable sports seasons of all time for so many reasons.

Drumroll please…the winner of the 2019-20 Best Performance of the Year goes to FCC Baseball standout RHP Riley Grant (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville HS). He turned in an unforgettable outing in Florida at the start of 2020 season. Grant pitched a complete game shutout in a 5-0 victory over (RV) St. Cloud Technical & Community College on March 6, 2020. He had quite the stat line: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 16 Ks. He finished the shortened 2020 season with a record of 2-0 and an astounding 0.64 ERA. Congrats to Riley Grant!

"That was quite possibly the most dominant pitching performance I've seen in 22 years at FCC," said FCC pitching Coach Steve Insley. "He got stronger as the game progressed and they just had no answer for him."

TIP OF THE CAP

A special shoutout to the runner-up, FCC softball standout Rachel Benden. She had a day on the diamond she will never forget. In the opening game of the doubleheader, she pitched a complete game shutout striking out 16 batters over six innings. At the plate in the same game, she went 3-for-4 (2B, HR) with four RBIs. In the nightcap, Benden would hit a homer in her first plate appearance and finish the game a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate. Not a bad day at the office, 16 Ks on the mound, and 5-for-6 (2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs) at the dish in the doubleheader sweep over Harford CC.
