FREDERICK, Md.- A showdown of two of the best in Region XX D2 hit the hardwood on Saturday afternoon as #14 FCC Cougars played host to the Lakers from Garrett College. Two well-coached teams and when these two teams collide on the court, it is always a battle. Saturday's contest was no different. The Cougars defeated the Lakers by the score of 75-67. With the victory, FCC improves to 18-3 on the year and 9-2 in conference play. The Lakers fall to 11-6 on the year.
The game was tight from tipoff. FCC took a 34-30 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes of action. With just under two minutes left in the contest, the Cougars were clinging to a 65-63 lead. Credit AJ Gregory (5-6 FTs) and Henry Okoye (4-4 FTs) for stepping up in pressure situations to knock down the all-important free throws to seal the victory.
The quarterback of the FCC offense continues to dazzle at the point. David Garey scored a team-high 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting in the win. He dished out four dimes and pulled down four rebounds. AJ Gregory earned the start on Saturday afternoon and made the most of his opportunity. Gregory poured in 18 points (5-of-8 FGs) and was clutch late in the game knocking down free throws in the waning seconds of the game to secure the win. Ben Meredith reached double figures, netting 13 points on 5-of-12 from the field. Henry Okoye was big on the glass for FCC. He pulled down a team-high 11 boards.
FCC shot the ball well from the field. They connected on 27-of-56 from the field, including 14-of-19 from beyond the arc.
The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday when they hit the road and lace them up to battle the Skipjacks of Chesapeake College. Tip is set for 7:00 P.M.
