NORTH EAST, Md. – The No. 4 seed FCC men's basketball team hit the court on Friday afternoon to take on the No. 5 seed Nighthawks from Northern Virginia CC in the opening round of the Region XX DII tourney. The two teams are very familiar with each other as this was the third meeting of the season. FCC would bust out in the second half and win by the score of 70-54. The Cougars will return to the hardwood on Saturday at 4:00 P.M. to take on the #1 seed Potomac State College of WVU Catamounts. The game will be played at host site, Cecil College. With the win, FCC improves to 20-10 on the season.
FCC held a 26-25 lead heading into the locker room after the first 20 minutes of play. FCC's Ben Meredith got going in the second half, scoring 16 points, and finishing with a game-high 20 points (9-of-16 FGs). He also pulled down a team-high eight boards. David Garey also turned it up on the offensive end and finished with 13 points. Chris Knight finished with 10 points and six boards in 22 minutes of action. Domantas Sakickas played a major role in this game. He registered eight first half points and buried two 3-pointers in the first half when the Cougars needed a spark. Each player that took the court for FCC registered in the scoring column.
Credit the FCC defense and they shut down NOVA's Michael Elliot. When the two teams played back on February 28, the shooting guard poured in a school record 41 points. That performance earned him NJCAA DII National Player of the Week honors. Today, Elliot finished the game with just 10 points on 2-of-13 from beyond the arc.
