FREDERICK, MD – A historical day on the pitch for the FCC men's soccer team as they captured the school's first Region XX D1 Tournament Championship in a thriller over Montgomery College. The Cougars earned a 2-1 victory over the Raptors on a golden goal by Diego Camarena just a couple of minutes into the extra period.
The Raptors jumped on the scoreboard first early in the second half when Luis Aquino found the back of the next. The Cougars would not go away quietly. In the 78th minute, the Cougars would get on the board thanks to a trio of players. Off a free kick from Alexander Aubourg, it was Alex Kryazhev with a glancing header into the path of a cutting Diego Camarena who knocked it in with his head to tie it up, 1-1 with just 12 minutes to go in regulation.
In overtime, there was definitely a momentum shift and it was in favor of the home team. FCC's Alex Kryazhev controlled the ball in the middle of the field and found a streaking Camarena down the sideline for the game-winning goal and the celebration began for the Cougars.
FCC will find out who they will face on Monday afternoon for District play. Stay tuned to FCC Athletics for the announcement.
Here's What They Had To Say
Head Coach John LaRocca
"Words can't explain how proud I am of this group for winning our school's first Division I Region 20 Championship. This has been an extremely challenging year in so many different ways, and for this young group to persevere through it all and come out on top makes it even more special."
"It was a rough start to the game but I had faith we would pull through. We were down 1-0 and we fought to come back and win the game 2-1. I'm incredibly proud of the team and these are the moments that moving away from home made it all worth it. I came here to win championships and that's what we accomplished as a team today. Proud of this team and legacy we are creating."
"Well this was my first year playing center back, it was quite the challenge but I believed in my coaching staff and they helped me through all this. The game was an intense game, they caught us off guard with the first goal. But we kept pushing and pushing and it paid off with the first goal. I'm proud of my team because I had never won any achievement like this. It is a great feeling and I wouldn't want it to be with any other group."
