Baseball wins nailbiter in Region XX D2 tourney

FREDERICK, Md. – Wow! What an opening day of the Region XX D2 baseball tourney. Fans sure got their money's worth as both games were decided by just a single run. In game one, CCBC Catonsville nipped Anne Arundel by the score of 5-4. In game two, FCC defeated the Knights from CCBC Essex by the score of 1-0.

Big time players step up in big time situations! That is what happened today in the opening day of the Region XX D2 baseball tournament. Frederick Community College defeated CCBC Essex by the score of 1-0 behind a dominating pitcher performance by the Cougars' starting pitcher Brian Rourke. FCC will square off against CCBC Catonsville on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 P.M.

FCC's starting pitcher turned in an absolute gem on Saturday. Rourke tossed a complete game shutout and struck out 15 batters in the win. He battled all game and was flat out dominating on the bump. This game was a nailbiter all afternoon and filled with much drama. CCBC Essex was down to their final out with the bags packed when FCC shortstop Jett Manning made a game-saving dive on a groundball that would have easily scored a pair of runs. Manning's heroics on the defensive end captured the victory for FCC.  Eric Dressler went 3-for-3 carrying the offensive load for FCC. Leadoff hitter Maciah Thomas went 1-for-3 and connected on a sacrifice fly to score the winning run for FCC.

  • FCC RHP Brian Rourke is now 10-1 on the season and has 97 strikeouts in 70 innings. He now sports an ERA of 1.80 on the season. He has tossed eight complete games this season and that ranks #1 in NJCAA D2 pitching category.
  • With today's victory Brian Rourke sits at 10 wins on the season and inks his name into record books. Rourke joins Nate Harmon, Carson Bach, and Mike Mitchell for wins in a single season at FCC
  • FCC improves to 37-14 on the season including 19-5 at home.
