Cougars Open Florida Trip with Doubleheader Sweep of Owens
The Frederick Community College Cougars baseball team opened its 2026 season in emphatic fashion, sweeping a doubleheader against Owens Community College on Friday in Davenport, Florida, as part of the RussMatt Baseball: College Baseball Invitational. Playing in Davenport, Frederick set the tone for its Florida trip with a 2-0 start to a young season.
Game one turned into a runaway as Frederick erupted for 21 runs in a 21–0 shutout. After three scoreless innings, the Cougars broke the game open with a 13-run fourth inning and added eight more in the fifth. Cole Swinimer powered the offense with a grand slam and five RBIs, while Clayton Dorsey matched him with five RBIs, including a home run. Jaxson Wood collected three hits and drove in three runs, and Braydon Kelman added three RBIs. Frederick capitalized on patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks. On the mound, Ethan Duff was nearly untouchable, striking out nine over four hitless innings to earn the win. Daniel Jakubowyc closed out the combined no-hitter with a perfect fifth inning.
The second game provided more drama, but the Cougars again found a way to finish with a 5–4 victory. Owens jumped out to an early lead, but Frederick answered in the third when Vincenzo Cusat launched a two-run homer to tie the game. Luis Perez Alfaro later gave the Cougars a spark with a solo shot. Evan Hassinger steadied the game out of the bullpen, tossing four strong innings to secure the win as Frederick plated the go-ahead runs in the middle innings and held on down the stretch.
With the sweep, the Cougars are off to a solid start in Florida, where they will play seven more games during the invitational. Frederick's next doubleheader comes Saturday, February 27 at 2:30 PM against Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
