Cougars Outlast Kalamazoo Valley to Stay Unbeaten in Florida
Frederick Community College Cougars improved to 6–0 on its Florida trip Wednesday night, defeating Kalamazoo Valley Community College 12–9 in a back‑and‑forth seven‑inning battle at the RussMatt Baseball: College Baseball Invitational in Davenport. After falling behind 1–0 in the second, the Cougars responded with a four‑run third inning sparked by RBI doubles from Clayton Dorsey and Andrew Varga, along with a three‑run home run from Luis Perez Alfaro. Kalamazoo Valley rallied with two runs in the third and a six‑run surge in the fifth, briefly taking a 9–4 lead. A five‑run sixth inning, highlighted by Wayne Kullman's grand slam, swung the momentum back in FCC's favor before they added three more insurance runs in the seventh to secure the victory.
Perez Alfaro led the offensive charge with two hits and five RBI, while Kullman's four‑RBI performance came at a crucial moment. Dorsey doubled, drove in two runs, and added a stolen base; Casey Westerberg chipped in two hits; and Hunter Lee contributed an extra‑base hit and a run scored. Frederick finished with 12 hits on the day.
On the mound, the Cougars relied on a full staff effort. Evan Hassinger opened with two innings of one‑run ball, followed by Vincenzo Cusat and Jacob Curtis through the middle frames. Ethan Hall steadied the game with 1.2 innings, earning the win after allowing only one unearned run. Austin Crist closed the door with a clean seventh inning to secure the save as Frederick held off late pressure from KVCC.
With the win, Frederick stays unbeaten at 6–0 and continues its strong start in Davenport. The Cougars return to action on Thursday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. for another single game against Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
