Cougars Split with No. 22 Lansing to Close Florida Trip at 8–1
Frederick Community College Cougars baseball wrapped up its final day at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational with a competitive doubleheader against nationally ranked No. 22 Lansing Community College Stars, splitting the two games to finish an impressive 8–1 during their week in Davenport, Florida.
The opening matchup tilted heavily toward the Stars, as the nationally ranked Stars took game 1 with a 26–2 decision. Frederick found early production with a first‑inning run and added another in the fifth on an RBI single from Luis Perez-Alfaro and a solo home run by William Thomas. Cole Swinimer, Andrew Varga, and Mikey Hafer each recorded hits.
The Cougars responded in Game 2, with a commanding 13–3 victory. Frederick immediately set the tone with a three‑run first inning and continued to attack with multi‑run frames in the fourth, fifth, and sixth. Lead off man for the Cougs, Cole Swinimer sparked the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three runs scored. Vincenzo Cusat continued his strong stretch at the plate with four hits, two RBI, and a stolen base, while Luis Perez-Alfaro added a three‑hit, three‑RBI showing. Jaxson Wood doubled home two runs, Braydon Kelman contributed an RBI single, and Casey Westerberg, Hunter Lee, and Wayne Kullman each added extra-base hits to extend FCC's lead throughout the afternoon.
On the mound, Tyler Haupt provided early stability before turning the ball over to six-foot, four-inch sophomore Evan Hassinger, who delivered four efficient innings with four strikeouts and only one earned run allowed to earn his second win of the young season.
With the Game 2 win, the Cougars closed their Florida trip at 8–1, continuing to build early-season momentum. Frederick now returns home before its next contest, a single road game at Allegany College of Maryland on Thursday, March 12 at 1:00 PM.
