Late-Inning Hitting Lifts Cougars to Sweep Over Trojans
The Frederick Community College Cougars baseball team leaned on timely hitting and late-game composure to secure a hard-fought doubleheader sweep over Allegany College of Maryland, improving to 26-10 overall and 16-4 in Region 20 play.
In Game 1, Frederick jumped out early with a three-run first inning. Cole Swinimer and Andrew Varga set the tone at the top of the lineup, combining for six hits and constant pressure on the bases. After building a 4-0 lead, the Cougars faced a sudden challenge in the sixth when Allegany capitalized on opportunities to tie the game. Frederick responded immediately, as Luis Perez Alfaro delivered the go-ahead run in the bottom half, and the bullpen closed the door with Matthew Calabrese (2-0) earning the win to secure a 5-4 victory.
Game 2 brought even more drama, as the Cougars once again found themselves in a tight battle. Luis Perez Alfaro sparked the offense early with an RBI double, while Vincenzo Cusat delivered a strong start on the mound to keep Frederick in control. The Trojans pushed ahead late, but the Cougars answered when Casey Westerberg crushed a game-tying home run in the seventh. In extra innings, Frederick's clutch hitting took over, with Mikey Hafer tying the game and Westerberg delivering again with a walk-off RBI single in the eighth to complete the 4-3 comeback win and the sweep.
Frederick now turns its attention to its next contest, a nine-inning home matchup against Garrett College on Thursday, April 23 at 3:00 PM.
