Cougars Battle Dragons in Region 20 Road Doubleheader
The Frederick Community College Cougars softball traveled to Ellicott City on Wednesday for a Region 20 doubleheader against the Howard Community College Dragons, battling through two competitive games before falling 4-2 and 12-5. The road setback moved Frederick to 5-5 overall.
In the opener, Frederick collected eight hits and struck first in the fourth inning when Daysha Cook launched a two-run home run to left field, scoring Raegan Miller and giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The Frederick pitching staff kept Howard off the scoreboard through five innings behind starter Alondra Sidock, but the Dragons broke through in the sixth inning with back-to-back two-run home runs to take a 4-2 lead. Despite strong hitting performances from Joelle Staub, Madison Ohler, Miller, and Brooke Renninger, who all recorded extra-base hits, the Cougars were unable to mount a late rally as Howard held on for the win.
Game two opened with Frederick again striking early when Leo Cline doubled to drive in Staub for a first-inning run. Howard responded immediately with a solo home run and later took the lead in the third. The Cougars briefly regained momentum in the fifth inning when Addison Custer delivered a two-run double to put Frederick ahead 3-2. However, the Dragons answered with a five-run inning to reclaim control before adding five more runs in the sixth. Frederick continued to compete offensively, highlighted by a solo home run from Cline in the sixth inning and an RBI from Miller, but the Cougars were unable to close the gap. Cline finished with two hits, including a home run and double, while Custer drove in two runs and Brooke Renninger added a hit and scored.
Frederick returns home Sunday, March 15 at 12 PM to host Chesapeake College for a twin bill. The home contest scheduled for Thursday, March 12, vs Salem Community College has been postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions.
