Opening Day in Myrtle Beach: Cougars Battle Through Two High-Scoring Games in Season Debut

Frederick Community College Cougars softball opened its 2026 season on Monday in Myrtle Beach as part of the Fastpitch Dreams spring training tournament, taking on Brunswick Community College in a competitive doubleheader that saw both games come down to late-inning swings.

In the opener, the Cougars matched Brunswick hit-for-hit with 11 apiece and showed resilience with a four-run push over the final two frames, but an early deficit proved too much to overcome in an 8–5 loss. Madison Ohler, Ava Yockelson, Joelle Staub, and Alyvia Shew each collected two hits to pace the Frederick offense, while Ohler, Raegan Miller, and Daysha Cook drove in runs. Alondra Sidock went the distance in the circle and kept the Cougars within striking distance, allowing no walks and scattering 11 hits over six innings. Frederick threatened late with rallies in both the sixth and seventh, but Brunswick's four-run bottom of the sixth made the difference.

Game two opened with a burst of Cougar energy as Frederick jumped out to a 6–0 lead through the first four innings. Addison Custer set the tone from the top of the order with three runs scored, a hit, and a stolen base, while Staub continued her strong day with a three-hit performance, including a double. Leo Cline added two hits and drove in three runs, and Miller chipped in two hits and two runs scored. Despite holding momentum early, the Cougars saw Brunswick surge back with a six-run fifth inning and a five-run seventh. Frederick added a final run in the seventh but ultimately fell 11–8 despite a 13-hit effort that showed the depth of the lineup. Miller worked six innings in the circle before Sidock delivered a strong seventh with three strikeouts.

The Cougars return to the field on Tuesday, February 24, at 12 PM for another doubleheader, this time against Vermont State–Johnson, as the spring slate rolls on in North Myrtle Beach.
