Cougars Sweep Chesapeake in Dominant Home Doubleheader

The Frederick Community College Cougars softball put together an impressive offensive display on Sunday afternoon in Frederick, sweeping Chesapeake College in a Region 20 doubleheader with convincing victories of 11-3 and 16-1. With the two wins, the Cougars improved to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in Region 20 Division II play.

In the opening game, Frederick used timely hitting and a big fourth inning to pull away. Chesapeake struck first in the second inning, but the Cougars responded quickly in the bottom half when Addison Custer singled to drive in Alyvia Shew and tie the game. Frederick added two more runs in the inning behind an RBI single from Joelle Staub and a run-scoring play by Alondra Sidock. After Chesapeake briefly cut into the lead, the Cougars broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning. Staub drew a walk that forced in a run, Leo Cline followed with an RBI single, and Madison Ohler delivered a run-scoring hit before Sidock and Ava Yockelson each drove in runs to extend the lead. Sidock also handled the pitching duties, throwing a complete game while allowing three runs and striking out four as Frederick secured the run-rule victory.

Game two featured an even bigger offensive outburst from the Cougars, who erupted for fourteen runs in the first inning to take complete control of the contest. Chesapeake briefly grabbed the lead with a solo home run in the top of the first, but Frederick responded immediately when Madison Ohler launched a grand slam to spark the rally. The Cougars continued to pile on as Daysha Cook delivered a two-run single, Staub drew a bases-loaded walk, and Brooke Renninger added a two-run double. Leo Cline followed with a two-run single before Alyvia Shew capped the inning with a three-run home run. Frederick added two more runs in the third on an RBI triple from Raegan Miller and another run-scoring play by Cook. In the circle, Ava Yockelson pitched all five innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four to complete the dominant performance.

The Cougars now turn their attention to another Region 20 Divisional game as they prepare for their next doubleheader on the road against Anne Arundel Community College on Wednesday, March 18 at 2:00 PM.
